There have been an increasing number of efforts that are all designed to support Chris Romulo’s efforts to rebuild his gym CROM. It’s been well known how Hurricane Sandy has wreaked havoc on the lives of business owners specifically in Rockaway, New York. There have been several individual efforts from Muay Thai Preservation Project’s donation drive and Muay Thai at the Mecca’s efforts. Coban even joined the cause with a seminar benefiting CROM’s recovery. But now long time New York promoter Friday Night Fights will have a fight card to help Chris Romulo rebuild his gym.

From the Fight for Rockaway press release:

Join us for a night to remember!

For over a decade, Chris Romulo was a leader in establishing and defining the sport of Muay Thai in our region. Romulo continued to do so on a national and international level towards the end of his long and illustrious career. He & his wife Sarah then opened Crom Martial Training where, as a coach, Romulo continued to champion the values that we all admired and shared during Romulo’s fighting career.

Hurricane Sandy ravaged Rockaway Beach where the Romulo’s gym and home were both located and destroyed. The fight for Rockaway will feature an incredible night of Muay Thai in celebration and support of Chris & Sarah Romulo!

Details: Fight for Rockaway: A Special Event Benefiting CROM Martial Training and the Romulo Family at Broad Street Ballroom

It’s good to see New Yorkers and Muay Thai’s east coast family come together to help one of their own. Chris Romulo’s gym is not only a Muay Thai gym but it’s a community center that does in fact help at risk youth. Check out the press they did for the event below.

The Marriage of Crossfit and Mixed Martial Arts

February 12, 2012

Fight Gone Crossfit

By Jack Goodson

Jack Goodson examines the link between mixed martial arts and CrossFit.

Fight Gone Bad—famed mixed martial artist B.J. Penn named it. CrossFitters both love and fear it.

The workout, a benchmark in the CrossFit community, was designed to match the metabolic demands of an organized MMA fight. Five minutes on, 1 minute off for 3-5 rounds. Sounds simple enough.

Sure. Words such as “brutal” or “savage”—and assorted others—come to mind when describing just how taxing this workout is. Penn, when quizzed on how it compared to an actual bout in the cage, commented that it was akin to a fight gone bad. The rest, as they say, is history.

CrossFit has grown exponentially since CrossFit founder and CEO Greg Glassman teamed with Penn to name this monster at the turn of the millennium. As of 2011, the number of affiliate gyms has increased from 18 in 2005 to over 2,400. Astounding. Perhaps the only comparable realm to experience a similar growth in popularity over the past decade is, of course, mixed martial arts.

These two disciplines have been linked for several years, even prior to Penn’s foray into Glassman’s world of functional fitness. They appear, at least on the surface, to be vastly different. However, the parallels between the two reach far deeper than many would likely expect.

The Mental Fight

By Eric Cusson

“The only reason that I won that fight was because of CrossFit New England,” says Eric Cusson, a mixed-martial-arts champion and CrossFitter out of CrossFit New England. He says CrossFit gave him the endurance and mental fortitude to win an important tournament.

According to Cusson, CrossFit provides more than a physical benefit. It provides a mental edge. He says he became a fighter and a skydiver to conquer his fears, and he believes CrossFit provides him with the same stimulus. While most of his workouts are standard CrossFit fare, he also asks CrossFit New England owner Ben Bergeron to program fight WODs for him in preparation for the cage.

Cusson says that a CrossFit gym differs from any other gym.

“You come into here and there’s no need for, like, attitudes because at the end of the class everyone’s pretty much going to be on the floor sweating and gasping for air, so you respect everybody,” he says.

In fact, Cusson used to train at a gym five minutes from his house but now embraces a longer commute.

“Now I’m driving like 40 minutes, 45 minutes, to come to CrossFit,” Cusson says. “It’s so worth it.”
